About Lostock

Leichhardt Campus of the Sydney Secondary College maintains a modest riverfront camp at Lostock, 60km north of Maitland in the Upper Hunter Valley. Set amongst working farms and rolling hills right on the banks of the Patterson River, it was once a one-teacher country school that has been converted to provide a rural education camp for groups of 30 or so, but is also set up as a comfortable weekender for College families, staff and general public when not in use by the College. The camp is looked after by Leichhardt Campus and parent volunteers.

The best bit about the school camp is that it is backs right onto the Patterson River where you can go swimming, kayaking and fishing. The school has a platypus and wombat colony at its doorstep and they are easily spotted from close up in the early morning and around sunset. Sightings of kangaroos, echidnas, kingfishers and other native animals are common. We even have our own resident cow and calf to mow the lawn and the neighbour's horses are happy to come over to check you out for apples.
Activities range from exploring the river or nearby dam, going on bushwalks, climbing hills or just lazing around. A nearby dairy farm welcomes visits at milking time and for kids to feed the calves and pigs and hypnotise chickens. Lostock is an easy drive to a number of Hunter Valley vineyards and restaurants at Gresford. A day visit to the bush, rainforests and clear waters of Barrington Tops National Park is well worth the pleasant 40 minute drive.

To describe Lostock as a camp is a bit of a misnomer - Lostock has all necessary creature comforts - electricity, flushing toilets, tank water, hot running water and showers. There is a reasonably equipped kitchen and outside, a BBQ and campfire. A common room has a fireplace, couches, stereo and games tables and comfortable seating.

Two separate cabins (former classrooms) that are equipped with sturdy bunks and comfortable mattresses form the sleeping quarter
You stay at Lostock on a shared facility/ self clean basis. All you need to bring is your food and drinks, bedding or sleeping bags and linen.

A modest tariff (from $40/classroom/night) is charged to fund electricity, the larger maintenance jobs and improvements. Click here for more information on tarrifs, conditions and booking arrangements. We accept bookings from non-College related parties as well as the Sydney Secondary College community.
